Founder & Creative Director
Kevin Luo first observed the transformative impact of dance during his adolescent years of studying dance in China as he evolved his own repertoire and philosophy throughout that period. Later, when he began teaching dance in California, he was thrilled to see the growing pride of children and teens as they developed graceful movement along with excellent socialization skills and self-expression. He likewise felt the pride of adult students who viewed dance as a creative outlet, and a way to enhance fitness and build meaningful connections. Kevin was delighted to see dancers increased self-confidence, discipline, and commitment to purpose, along with their sense of shared community and cross-cultural understanding. Over the first several years of Kevin teaching Chinese classical dance to children and adults in the Sacramento area, his students were regularly invited to performed at events and joined international competitions. Their achievements have included winning the acclaimed Taoli World Dance Competition as well as the Spotlight Dance Cup, with Diamond Awards for all their routines and special recognition for Judge's Choice, Category Winner, Division Winner, and Overall Winner.
In 2020, with well-known community leader and music educator Huanyu Dou, Kevin co-founded 1st Position Dance Academy in Sacramento. In 2023, with personal referrals from existing and former students driving heightened demand, Kevin designed and opened a new dance center there complete with three studios, providing flexible added space to offer a broader selection of dance courses, programs, and events.
The mission of 1st Position Dance Academy is to continue advancing a vibrant dance community that celebrates inclusivity and empowers individuals of all ages to tap into their passion for dance. Embracing the unique narratives and talents that each student brings, 1st Position Dance Academy provides a welcoming, joy-filled space where individuals can thrive, and where cross-cultural respect and appreciation flourish. With the opening of the new suite of studios, the upcoming 2024-2025 dance season is being expanded to include the addition of hip-hop, contemporary, and ballet to the celebrated, iconic Chinese classical and folk offerings.
